The sacrament of Baptism is the beginning of spiritual life.
When we are born, we enter this world with a soul that is tainted with original sin. There is darkness, where there should be light. Original sin was born with the first act of disobedience against God, the eating of the forbidden fruit by Adam and Eve.
The sacrament of Baptism was instituted to remove original sin. Through Baptism, our soul is cleansed and allow the light to shine in the darkness. With this gift, we can be relieved of our venial and cardinal sins, whether received as a child or an adult. This is the first step into faith.
While Baptism does completely remove original sin, we are still human, and are bound to make mistakes. With this gift of Baptism, we open ourselves to other sacraments and can ask for forgiveness, and experience peace, joy, and relief. Baptism is the first act of devoting ourselves to the love of God and his Son, and a way to choose a better life and afterlife for ourselves.
